Helm welcomed over 40 professionals through its doors for the second annual Open Day!
On September 27th, Helm held an Open Day, which attracted a wide range of professionals from Dundee, Angus, Fife, and beyond. Throughout the day, we ran 4 tours, and optional visits to our offsite training garage, Helm Autocare, and networking opportunities. Each tour group was shown around the Helm building and the team discussed all the options available to young people when they come through our doors. The aim of the day was to showcase exactly what Helm can offer, and to establish partnerships with other organisations who also work with young people.
“It was an honour to open the doors of Helm and showcase the life changing work we do with young people. Helm has such a wide range of support for young people, from employability, housing, and life skills to practical experience in our beauty, automotive and trades learning centres. The work we do with young people is vital to ensuring they can realise their potential and progress to positive destinations. Hearing so many people comment on just how much Helm offers, reignites my passion to ensure all professionals in the area know about Helm and how they can refer a young person to our charity.” – Ally Calder, Helm’s CEO.
When asked for their biggest takeaway of the day, attendees told us:
“This is a great option for young people who maybe don’t manage at school or don’t have the opportunity to learn life skills. There is a practical, real life approach as well as ongoing support for as long as it’s needed and in whatever way it is needed.”
“All staff were so kind, empathetic to young people’s needs and backgrounds. A genuine and safe space for young people to learn and develop.”
“It is extremely practical – from basics such as ensuring physiological needs are met and a good learning/development environment is created prior to buckling down, to real hands on experience that sets aside the individual from other applicants with apprenticeships/courses and similar.”
“Throughout the duration of the trip, I kept coming back to thinking how much opportunity there was for the young people! Helm can basically help them kickstart their adult life as well as working career, all whilst taking part in activities that allow them to be themselves.”
“It was very clear how passionate all the staff were about being a true support to young people and have created a wonderful space with a great atmosphere.”
